Other schemes shortlisted in the category include the Francis Crick Institute, the Bloomberg Development and the West Croydon Interchange Masterplan.

The RTPI Awards are the most established and respected awards in the UK planning industry. Running for 40 years, they celebrate exceptional examples of planning and the contribution planners make to society.

CB1 is Brookgate’s vibrant new city quarter being developed around Cambridge station. It is providing a significant boost to Cambridge’s economy by attracting leading, high-growth businesses including Microsoft Research, Amazon and Base4, residents and visitors to the area.  Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, the masterplan is delivering a state-of-the-art transport interchange and public square, the UK’s largest cycle park with 3,000 spaces, prestigious ‘Grade A’ offices, premium residential, retail and hotel space and purpose-built student residence accommodation.

The approved scheme comprises the comprehensive redevelopment of the area surrounding Cambridge railway station, a Grade II Listed building, and the regeneration of approximately 9.9 hectares of brownfield land in this highly sustainable location, through the Lord Richard Rogers designed Masterplan.

Mike Derbyshire, Head of Planning at Bidwells said: “We are absolutely delighted that this innovative and bold development has been shortlisted for these prestigious Planning Awards. It has been an honour to work with so many talented organisations who have helped to make the masterplan become a reality. Walking through CB1 now, it is a bustling hive of people and a stunning gateway to the city of Cambridge.”

Organisations involved in CB1 include: Beacon Heritage, Brookgate CB1 Limited, Chetwoods, Commission Projects, Formation Architects, Grimshaw Architects, Hilson Moran, Mills & Reeve, Herbert Smith Freehills, Mott MacDonald, Perkin + Wills, Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects, Roberts Myers Associates, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, RPS, Savills and TP Bennett.

Stephen Wilkinson, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute said: “The finalists represent some outstanding contributions to planning which are making a positive impact for the community and environment. The judges will find it difficult choosing the winners given the high calibre of entries this year.”

This year saw a nearly 40% increase in entrants and the judges have shortlisted 90 finalists across 14 categories with an overall winner awarded the Silver Jubilee Cup. The winners will be announced during a ceremony held at Milton Court at The Barbican, London, on 15 June 2017.

Andrew Jones, Practice Leader Design Planning + Economics at AECOM said: “AECOM is proud to once again be a headline sponsor of this year’s RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence. The finalists are a diverse mixture of outstanding examples of planning, which demonstrate the impact the profession has on quality and delivery in the built environment.”

Tickets for the ceremony are now on on sale.

The RTPI champions the power of planning in creating prosperous places and vibrant communities. It is the only body in the UK that confers Chartered status to planners, the highest professional qualification sought after by employers. We support our members – 23,000 worldwide - throughout their careers.
