Bidwells team takes part in gruelling '12 peaks in 12 hours' charity challenge

An intrepid team from Bidwells took part in a gruelling challenge to scale 12 peaks in the Lake District in just 12 hours - and raised more than £7,000 for East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH).

The team from Fund Management carried out the challenge earlier this month, and covered more than 18 miles over a range of peaks including the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike, which has an elevation of 3,209ft. Other peaks in the challenge included: Bowfell – 2,959ft, Esk Pike – 2,904ft, Great End – 2,990ft, Allen Crags – 2,575ft, Rossett Pike – 2,136ft, Pike of Stickle – 2,326ft, Loft Crag – 2,238ft, Harrison Stickle – 2,415ft, Thunacar Knott – 2,372ft, Pavey Ark – 2,300ft and Sergeant Man – 2,415ft.

The challenge was the brainchild of Andrew Long, who organised and planned the route.

A team of 18 were involved in the challenge, with some taking part in sections of the route, but a core group of ten completed the challenge within the timeframe. They climbed along the peak route, starting and finishing at Great Langdale.

Heather Lay, from the team said: “It really was a tough challenge, and although we had trained for it in the months before, we still didn’t realise how physically and mentally draining it would be.

“We had such a tight timeframe that there was only ever time for the briefest of breaks, before we marched on again, but it was an amazing experience which brought us even closer as a team and we are absolutely delighted to have raised such a terrific amount for such a worthwhile charity. We would like to thank everyone for their sponsorship and support.”

Lotte Rietveld, EACH Corporate Development Manager said: “Congratulations to everyone who took part in this impressive 12 peak challenge. Bidwells are long-term supporters of EACH and we are truly grateful for their continued support. EACH cares for children and young people with life-threatening illnesses across East Anglia and supports their families. Without the support of companies such as Bidwells we would not be able to continue to provide these vital services to local families at a time when they need it most. There’s still time to donate to the climbers after their challenge so please do give whatever you can and support a great local cause.”

There is still time to donate to the team by visiting its fundraising page here.
