Breakthrough Technologies 2014: Sagentia experts discuss recent innovations

Sagentia, a leading global science, technology and product development company is partnering with MIT Technology Review to present on the most important technological breakthroughs of the past year at the prestigious 10 Breakthrough Technologies 2014 event. Taking place today at the Nokia Event Space in Cambridge, MA, the event will examine the potential role of these technological breakthroughs in future product development and how to bring them to market.

The 10 breakthrough technologies selected by MIT Technology Review come from a range of industries, such as healthcare, communications, manufacturing, gaming and energy. They include: Oculus Rift, virtual reality technology currently focused on gaming but with the potential to impact many other areas; agile robots, which might have applications in medical rehabilitation and disaster response; and agricultural drones, which are starting to provide farmers with new ways to increase yields and reduce crop damage. Also looking to the broader technology landscape, advances in grid scale energy storage, acoustic signature monitoring and graphene water purification, as well as their potential implications and applications, will also be discussed.

Jason Pontin, editor in chief and publisher of MIT Technology Review will introduce their 10 technologies and explain the selection process. Dr Robin Lee, Chief Technology Officer at Sagentia, will then discuss the potential for some of these breakthroughs in the context of future product development and associated market opportunities, as well as focussing on the real-world problems they address. Other technologies included in the top ten include ultra-private smart phones, microscale 3-D printing, smart wind and solar power, neuromorphic chips, mobile collaboration, brain mapping and genome editing.

“Technology news is full of incremental developments, but few of them qualify as true milestones,” says Jason Pontin, editor in chief and publisher of MIT Technology Review. “Our event gives attendees the unique opportunity to hear firsthand about the most pivotal technological breakthroughs of the past year and what their potential impact will be from a leading industry expert. As a recognised leader in scientific and technological innovation, Sagentia’s Dr Lee will provide exclusive insight into how to evaluate and commercialize technical advances, as well as providing his thoughts on further potential breakthrough technologies to look out for in the future.”

Sagentia’s Dr Lee is a keen proponent of science and technology innovation and has been responsible for numerous breakthrough products and innovations including the world’s first solid state ophthalmic surgical laser, low-cost patented technologies for non-contact rotary position encoding, and device technologies for photodynamic therapies (PDT). He has also pioneered developments in advanced optics, robotics, fluidics, and pneumatics developed for diagnostics instruments, as well as novel electronic registers for domestic water meters.

“All of the cutting-edge technologies in this year’s shortlist have tremendous potential within their field to make a real difference and expand the scope of human possibility,” says Dr Lee. “At Sagentia, we live and breathe science and technology innovation, so it’s incredibly exciting for me to again be partnering with MIT Technology Review. Each of the technologies being discussed solve challenging problems and create powerful new ways of using technology that will deliver a positive impact many years into the future.”
