The business of doing business

Next month, The Business Show will be back for its seventeenth year running at Olympia in west London. Among the country’s largest business shows, it allows companies from major organisations to SMEs to meet, interact — and hopefully do business together.

The business of doing business

The quality of a show’s speakers is among its major draws, and The Business Show has some big names, including two current and two former Dragons. They’re joined by leading figures such as Google’s head of B2B marketing UK, Raja Saggi, to Steve Parish, co-owner and chairman of Crystal Palace F.C.

The real focus for any business show, though, is on the hall full of exhibitors, and Olympia will be offering a couple of hundred stands. These will range from major companies like American Express and Goldman Sachs to ambitious SMEs, and there’ll be plenty of organisations offering help, from The Pensions Regulator to national networking group 4Networking.

You’ll find displays coming at you from every side at The Business Show. Some will be whole sections of the hall done out by a major sponsor, others little stalls with a banner and a spread of merchandise, but every one of them will be competing for your attention.

Display your interest

It’s very easy to come out of a show this size feeling dazed, confused and not entirely sure which of the people you spoke to these bags-full of merchandise actually relate to. It’s a good idea to leave yourself a reminder. Jotting down a few notes on their business card works, but an even better approach would be to take a selfie at each display you’re genuinely interested in. The exhibitor will be delighted, and you’ll have a visual cue to jog your memory.

On the other hand, valuable as visiting can be, being an exhibitor is even better. As an exhibitor, the contacts you’re looking for come to you, whether it’s someone you can do business with directly or someone who can arrange an appointment for you.

Selling your brand

Of course, you’ll be competing with two hundred other exhibitors, which is why it’s vital to grab attention. A display it’s impossible to walk past, a space people will want to hang around in and merchandise that will make them remember you better afterwards than the other exhibitors — then it’s just up to you to sell your brand.

Exhibitions like the Business Show are venues to learn, to be inspired and to make contacts, but most of all they’re invaluable venues for doing business.
