Businesses with South Asian link invited to participate in the Cambridge Mela

The Cambridge Mela (now in its fourth year) - the city’s annual festival of South Asian culture - is inviting local businesses to get involved on Sunday 7th July 2013.

The Mela features music, dance, food, fashion and combines nationally renowned South Asian cultural performers with activities from the local community and is aimed at people from all backgrounds.   Businesses can be get involved in marketing themselves at the event or providing content.

Sunday 7th July 2013 is the Cambridge Mela on Parker's Piece, a festival of South Asian culture including music, dance, food and fashion.  Local community organisations partner with Cambridge City Council to programme the day as part of the annual Big Weekend event, and attract top South Asian performers alongside local activities.  There are some of the hottest names in bhangra and hip hop alongside traditional Indian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani culture, amongst others.

The event is entirely free and attracts over 5,000 people and is covered by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

There are opportunities for local businesses to get involved with the event, whether to engage with local South Asian communities of Cambridge, or profile your own work to a wide audience.

Opportunities include:

  • Having an information or activity pitch or trade stand in a marquee
  • Offering some activity that could feature as part of the programme e.g. cultural workshop, talk, demonstration
  • Sponsoring an aspect of the event

To discuss these opportunities, please contact Elaine Midgley, Arts & Events Manager Elaine.midgley@cambridge.gov.uk 01223 457592 by Fri 7th June

We are open to your ideas!
