Businesses support fireworks and bonfire night on Midsummer Common

On Saturday 5 November, Cambridge will be living up to its reputation for providing the biggest fireworks display in the Eastern region with the annual Bonfire Night event on Midsummer Common.

Organised by Cambridge Live on behalf of Cambridge City Council, Bonfire Night begins with the Thurston Fun Fair at 6pm and a variety of food stalls including hog roasts, candyfloss and toffee apples and other local food and drinks vendors. The fireworks display will happen at 7.30pm and the bonfire will be lit straight after. The Fun Fair continues until 10pm.

Alongside the event, Cambridge Live is working with a local storyteller, Chip Colquhoun from local storytelling company Snail Tales, to run a Spooky Creative Writing Contest. Children up to the age of 14 from schools and community centres in and around Cambridge can enter a poem of 10 - 40 lines.

Bonfire Night’s Business Champion, RealVNC, has played a vital role in securing the future of the event, gathering support from businesses across the city. This year there are over 30 local businesses supporting the event and still opportunities to get involved. Despite this generous business support, the event relies on individual donations. To give £3 to support Bonfire Night, members of the public can text BANG to 70500.

Members of the public are urged to view the fireworks only from the official viewing areas of Midsummer Common and Jesus Green. Bonfire Night is likely to be extremely busy, with road closures all around Midsummer Common, so please allow plenty of time for the journey and read the travel advice page at www.cambridgelivetrust.co.uk/city-events.  Fireworks and sparklers are not allowed at the event.

Steve Bagnall, Managing Director of Cambridge Live, said “Following a successful summer season working with Cambridge City Council to deliver the City Events, we are looking forward to another memorable event. Cambridge Live is particularly grateful to RealVNC for their incredible support.”

Cllr Richard Johnson, Executive Councillor for Communities, said “Bonfire Night on Midsummer Common is an event which brings the people of Cambridge together. I am grateful for the continued strong support from the local business community in helping us stage this much-loved event. I also hope attendees will consider making a voluntary donation to help keep the event free for all. Bonfire Night will be an excellent event and I am sure everyone will enjoy the occasion."
