Calling 16 to 18 year olds for a day of history investigation at IWM Duxford

Are you aged between 16 and 18? Do you have a passion for history? The American Air Museum at IWM Duxford is looking for students to take part in an innovative and exciting History Day on Tuesday 11 August.

In a day of investigation and discovery, you’ll have the opportunity to develop essential skills and put them into practice as you help to uncover the stories of the American airmen and women who came to East Anglia during the Second World War.

Jenny Cousins, Project Leader, American Air Museum said: “This a great opportunity for anyone studying History in the Sixth Form to pick up some skills and get a head-start, whilst seeing behind the scenes at the museum.”

Your programme of new learning will be developed by the American and British teachers who are joining IWM Duxford for the American Air Museum Summer Residency this year. The day you spend with them will be the grand finale of the week’s Residency, where teachers put into practice all they have learned over the past week.

During the History Day, you’ll go behind the scenes at IWM Duxford and look at aircraft close-up to see how material remains can change the way we understand the past. You’ll explore a collection of historic photographs and learn how curators look after them to protect them for the enjoyment of future generations.

The team will help you to see where you live in a different way by taking you back to the East of England during the Second World War, when the region was covered in American air bases.

Your day of activities will culminate in true American style with a game of softball and a barbeque.

Places on the American Air Museum History Day are free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve your place, please email [email protected]
