Organised by the Western China Overseas High Tech and High Talents Conference (OHTC), it takes place on the afternoon of February 24th at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge (Trinity Street CB2 1TA).

The future development of our world will be driven strongly by ever more sophisticated technology. Fintech, Biotech, Agritech, Genomics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning and Big Data will dominate life on earth as the decades unfold. Sophisticated and well focused human talent will be needed to drive that technology and scientific advances for the good of mankind.
Certain locations in our world have developed strong capability with science and technology. Two such centres are Cambridge – where Europe’s primary and largest cluster of hi-tech companies resides – and in China, Chengdu in Sichuan Province. Both have developed large numbers of new and fast growing companies. And in the Province in China which is neighbour to Sichuan – Guizhou, we find a burgeoning cluster of world class companies focused on Fintech (Financial Technology) and Big Data. Guiyang, the capital city of Guizhou has become the big data and crowdfunding centre of China and very much a leading centre on the world stage. In Chengdu the Hi-Tech Zone is among the largest of its kind in China.
In 1995 the State Council in Sichuan founded the Chengdu Overseas High-Tech and High Talents Conference (OHTC). Since that time a series of conferences and other events have successfully extended the influence and outreach of OHTC beyond the borders of Sichuan and indeed those of China. Initiatives are underway to increase and enhance learning and talent development by collaborations with centres of excellence outside China and the UK has become a major target for future development.
What better idea can you conceive against this background than further and specific initiatives to bring Chengdu, Guiyang and Cambridge closer together? The synergy resulting might in some cases change the world and clearly, many areas of activity will move forward faster through a “better together” approach than through needless competition.
It is with these thoughts in mind that we invite you to join us on the afternoon of February 24th (17:00 to 18:30 (GMT)) at Gonville and Caius College, itself having great UK-China connections, for a seminar which looks forward to prospects of real co-operation and joint activity for Cambridge – Chengdu and Greater China in Tomorrow’s World.

About Western China Overseas High Tech and High Talents Conference (OHTC)
Founded in 1995, the Western China Overseas High Tech and High Talents Conference (OHTC) has been designated as a key activity since 2004, which is co-hosted by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and Sichuan Provincial People’s Government and co-organized by Chengdu Municipal Government and related departments of provincial level.
Over the years, the OHTC has gradually become an important international activity with rich content and strong academic atmosphere. Participated by all the provinces and region of western China, the OHCT is the unique brand of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council to support western development and the most influential exchange event in technology and talent hosted in western China.
Since 2009, the OCTH has invited more than 3000 experts and scholars from developed countries and regions, hold more than 200 science lectures and academic forums in various fields, contributed to the scientific cooperation of 572 talents and 125 projects, with a total contract amount of 80 billion RMB.
