A new Cambridge company is offering local companies help in the field of Computer Aided Design (CAD). CaddC, founded by CAD expert John Cochrane, can provide Cambridge firms with the means to turn design dreams into reality through John’s in-depth knowledge and practical experience of SolidWorks – one of the world’s most popular CAD programs.
“The classic conundrum facing startups is they have great ideas backed up by a sound scientific background, but turning those ideas into a workable reality is often a step too far as they simply don’t have the necessary skills in mechanical engineering,” he explains.
“Anybody can buy a CAD program and work up a 3D model, but the problem comes at the production stage when it becomes evident that it hasn’t been designed correctly, meaning it is either impossible, or unfeasibly expensive, to actually make the product and bring it to market. I’m here to provide the necessary CAD expertise to anyone that needs it – that means startups in particular, but also established companies that either choose to outsource their CAD work or need help to cover a temporary staff shortage.”
John is certainly well qualified - he has a background in engineering and spent the last 15 years working for the SolidWorks company at a senior level, during which time he was responsible for developing and refining the system. Before that John spent ten years with Unigraphics - a leading CAD company used by companies such as Boeing, General Motors, Ford and General Electric
John is also steeped in the history and culture of the Cambridge engineering scene, having completed an apprenticeship with Cambridge Instruments back in the 1980s. He has been based in the city ever since and is now offering his considerable CAD experience on a consulting and contracting basis. He uses SolidWorks to model, build and design products and make them ready for manufacture.
Although he only set up CaddC in April, John has already been working with Nuffield-Road based C4 Carbides and is confident that other Cambridge companies, and startups in particular, can benefit from his help.
