Hill is launching a competition in conjunction with the Cambridge News to recruit Cambridge’s “zero carbon family” to take up residence at the home in a conveniently located suburb of the city.
As well as over £21,000 worth of rent, Hill will pay the family’s utility bills for the entire period. The home will also come fully furnished to a high specification for the year and the garden will be fully landscaped. The overall value of the prize is estimated to be in excess of £50,000.
The house, built to one of the very highest levels of sustainability*, has been constructed in advance of Hill’s launch of one of the UK’s largest zero carbon developments. The scheme, consisting of 208 homes, is called Virido, which means ‘to become green’ in Latin. It will be delivered in conjunction with the City Council in 2015 at Clay Farm and is currently being considered by the City’s planners.
Rob Hall, Deputy Managing Director at Hill, explains: “We are breaking new ground with Virido here in Cambridge; this study gives us an opportunity to undertake an in depth look at how people interact with new sustainable technologies. Many of the appliances we are installing in the homes are unfamiliar to the average family, such as rainwater collection facilities and mechanical ventilation, and we would like to observe how an everyday family interacts with and uses these innovations.
“The winning family will need to be eager to be part of an important piece of research into sustainability. Cambridge has already proven its status as an innovation-hub in recent years so we know of no better location to launch one of the UK’s largest sustainable developments and seek out one family to be zero carbon for a year. This expansion of the southern fringe of Cambridge will further consolidate the city’s considerable economic standing in the UK.”
Hill is a top 20 UK housebuilder and is behind the Ceres and Vesta developments at CB1. The competition will run for four weeks in conjunction with the Cambridge News. Applicants will be required to collect fives tokens from the newspaper, one token online and then fill in the application form on the website. Successful applicants will then be invited for an interview, with the winning family being announced in late October.
