CIIPM Summer Meeting
Last month the 2nd Cambridge Information and Intellectual Property Meeting (#CIIPM) saw 55 of us gather at Homerton College Conference Centre for an afternoon meeting of formal talks, discussions, networking, and the opportunity to meet IP software and service providers at our small focused exhibition.

The UK IPO was also present to assist with questions on filing patents, and gaining other IPRs for the UK and in Europe.  Attendees came from all over the UK, representing large enterprises to micro businesses, and came from academia, high technology, ICT and life sciences industries, professional and legal service providers, governmental organisations and technical consultancies, and included CEOs, IP Analysts, CTOs, business development executives, IP Managers, patent agents, technical directors, R&D managers, accountants, researchers, and trainees.

CIIPM creates a space for people who are involved with the commercialisation of IP to meet locally in Cambridge to discuss, to learn from each other, to exchange views with those from different industries, and to meet other professionals engaged with creating, managing and commercialising technologies who want to understand more about IP, and the information created around it.   Networking opportunities at the meeting are particularly valued by CIIPM attendees, speakers and exhibitors alike.

CIIPM Exhibitors
This year’s meeting saw us spread out a little into the Fellows Dining Hall, giving more space for the exhibition, where we also had our lunch and the meeting breaks.  Our exhibitors this year included the UK IPO;  RWS Group Inovia providing patent filing and translation services, and four companies who provide search and analysis software for patent and IP related research -  Questel, patsnap, Minesoft, and CAS  - and  CFL software who are looking to expand their plagiarism detection software into the patent information market.

Here’s what some attendees said about the meeting:

‘I found the talks yesterday very interesting and it was a great networking experience, so the CIIP Meetings are a great initiative; thanks again’.

‘Very well organised and good salad of talks’

‘Liked location and ability to stay at college’

‘Great meeting – thanks!’

 CIIPM Programme
The formal programme included seven talks on the theme of managing IP at the early stages of commercialisation.  Martin Blackburn from Cambridge start-up Luminance kicked off the meeting with a look into the future of AI for the professional research market.  Luminance’s artificial intelligence (AI) based approach to gathering the right information for final analysis for M&A due diligence has wide potential for the legal and IP profession, then after the break followed talks by Maria Peyman of Birketts on how to approach contracts from an IP perspective,

Deepti Agarwal, CEO of Cambridge based Watermill Accounting on R&D Tax Credits, and a talk from Paula Juckes , patent information specialist at biopharmaceutical company UCB gave an insightful talk on how to find out what your competitors are up to using patent information.  During the second part of the meeting we heard from Marc Wilkinson at J A Kemp about the options for obtaining IP protection using patents in Europe, including a look at the forthcoming UPC, or unitary patent, for EU countries.

The afternoon was then rounded off by Guy Newcombe, CEO of  Archipelago Technology who discussed the company’s IP management procedure whilst working to a budget, and Nicola Baker-Munton Stratagem IPM CEO,  with her talk on the balancing act between trade secrets (undisclosed know-how), and obtaining IP protection through patent applications.  The meeting programme with abstracts of the talks and information on the exhibitors can be downloaded here: http://www.extractinfo.info/ciipm/annual-meeting/

CIIPM Background
