Cambridge Markets team celebrates national award success

Cambridge City Council’s Markets team has been named as Market Team of the Year at the prestigious National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) awards ceremony.

The Cambridge team was praised by the awards judges for their efforts in delivering improved services for more than 200 traders at the city’s general market, the All Saint’s Garden market and the Sunday arts and crafts market.

Also cited were the team’s commitment to supporting traders’ businesses, their contribution to promoting markets regionally and nationally, and the successful Love Your Local Market festival they organised in May.

In addition the judges praised the team’s collaborative work with Cambridge Business Improvement District (BID) in arranging a series of night markets this year, and their work with the Cambridge Street Aid charity in seeking to provide ways back into employment for formerly homeless people.

The team was presented with a trophy to mark their success during the NABMA annual conference last week.

This is the second national award the team has won this year, after earning a Great British Market Award in January for the best ‘Love Your Local Market’ campaign.

Cllr Rosy Moore, Executive Councillor for Environmental Services and City Centre, said: “Cambridge’s markets and their many fantastic traders have a special place in the life of the city, providing a vibrant commercial environment for small businesses and a valuable resource for residents and visitors alike.

“I’m delighted that this national recognition reflects the efforts of the Markets team to boost the profile of our markets, help the traders flourish, and introduce innovative new ways of working.

Hilary Paxman, Chief Executive of NABMA, said: “Cambridge Market is a very worthy winner of this award. Their team of just four people has been working together since 2014 and during that time have delivered new initiatives including better trader support and improved communications.

“They have also increased the number of markets, including a series of night markets and some amazing events for ‘Love Your Local Market’ week, to meet the needs of the city and its visitors. We are delighted to recognise their work and achievements in this way.”
