Cambridge MP shows support for Bookshop Day

Today Daniel Zeichner, MP for Cambridge, will show his support for Bookshop Day by visiting Cambridge University Press Bookshop (Trinity Street CB2 1SZ), the oldest bookshop site in the country. He is encouraging everyone to read a book this October.

Bookshop Day (tomorrow 9 October) is a one-day nationwide celebration of all high street bookshops, big and small. It is part of the Books Are My Bag (BAMB), a consumer-facing campaign endorsed by publishers, retailers and authors that highlights the cultural importance of bookshops, with booksellers all over the country celebrating the vital role bookshops play in the community.

Mr Zeichner said he was a strong supporter of getting more people reading, and backed the BAMB campaign to get consumers to support their local bookshop and ensure their high street is thriving.

He said: “Local bookshops contribute immensely to the social and economic health of towns and communities up and down the length of this country, and we are incredibly lucky, here in Cambridge, to have stores for every bibliophile and bookworm. Bookshops are vibrant community hubs, and remain the best way to discover new books which help broaden our horizons and open up new opportunities. I look forward to indulging in one of my favourite pastimes this Friday."
