Cambridge Museum launches Digital Digging App

Atlas Live's Interactive Galleries app is helping museum visitors delve through thousands of years of local history. The iPad app has been launched by Cambridge's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and provides insight on local artefacts contained in the fascinating ‘Cambridge Wall’ display.

The Cambridge Wall display is part of a new gallery on the archaeology of Cambridge created when the museum reopened in 2012. The innovative three-dimensional display generates substantial interest among museum visitors, whose feedback has highlighted the desire for more information about particular artefacts.

The Museum was keen to respond to visitor feedback, but at the same time to experiment with using technology to enhance the visitor experience. Visitors can borrow an iPad loaded with the app from the Museum’s Information Desk and get digging.

The application was designed and developed by Atlas Live Ltd and contains information on nearly 160 objects. It starts with a complete representation of the cabinet and enables visitors to add or remove layers containing artefacts from the Medieval, Roman and Prehistoric periods. The app is simple and intuitive to use. Visitors interact by pinching and tapping the screen to discover details about the objects including where they were found.

“The intention is to lead the visitor on a short journey from the real world in the museum to the virtual world of the app,” said Billy Gibson of Atlas Live.  The application can be configured for a wide range of gallery displays, pairing the ancient and the cutting-edge.

It also enables the museum to do their own data digging. The application allows the visitor to enter general information about themselves and gives the option of joining the mailing list. This enables the museum to create a picture of who their visitors are, what interests them and then to keep in contact after they have left the museum.
