Cambridge Regional College hosts prestigious chefs' competition

Cambridge Regional College is to host a top competition for college chefs - the prestigious University of Cambridge Culinary Competition – at its Park restaurant next month.

The event will see talented chefs from across the university and young chefs from CRC showcase their skills in a live cook-off, with members of the public offered a rare chance to see them in action.

Chefs will also take part in the Salon Culinaire, a competition with the emphasis on presentation. Competitors will be judged on the appearance of their pre-prepared dishes in a range of categories from canapés to afternoon tea - described as “the visual feast” of the day.

Organiser Magalie Cooper of Westminster College said visitors would be able to watch the live cook-off on giant screens in the college restaurant.

“Following the success of the 2011 event, the 2013 event is back with a fresh format and back at the fantastic Cambridge Regional College venue. The standard at the last event was superb, and we look forward to seeing just how high the bar can be raised in 2013,” she said.

“With all three competitions taking place on the same day, at the same site and with all our exhibitors and sponsors working with us on the day, 2013 promises to be a fantastic event for all involved – organisers, competitors, sponsors and attendees.”

CRC catering lecturer Ian Sparke said the college was very happy once again to host the competition and to be working alongside Cambridge University.

“It is going to be great to see our trainee chefs entering and competing alongside their peers from local industry, many of whom are previous students of the college. CRC students won the best newcomer award last time and we are very keen to build on our previous successes,” he said.

Chefs will also compete for the highly-coveted Chef of the Year award and the hotly-contested Stewards’ Cup, awarded to the college with the most overall points.

The high-profile judging panel includes top Michelin-starred chefs Mark Poynton of Alimentum and Simon Hulstone of The Elephant.

The competition is open to visitors and takes place from 9am to 5pm on Thursday,  31 October 2013. For more information, go to http://cambridgechefcomp.com.
