Cambridge researchers selected to present at the Academy of Medical Sciences

Alastair Lamb, a Clinical Lecturer working at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, and Dr Catherine Aitken, a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, have been selected to present their work at the Winter Meeting of the Academy of Medical Sciences in London next week (November 13).

They will compete with 10 other researchers in a research communication competition, where they will present their work in the 15 minutes and three minutes category respectively. Three prizes are on offer -two for best presentation (one for the three minutes and one of the 15 minutes category) and an overall best communicator prize.

Mr Lamb's work looks at the genome of prostate cancer and uses these finding to predict how aggressive it is and how it would respond to different treatments. His work has been covered widely in the press, when  he published one of his latest scientific papers. Some examples include the BBC, Guardian, and Huffington Post.

Dr Aitken's research focuses on how female fertility is affected by maternal diet during pregnancy and other effects of the early-life nutritional environment on the long-term reproductive health of children.

The competition and the meeting are open to the Academy of Medical Sciences Starter Grant holder, of which Mr Lamb and Dr Aitken hold one.  These are designed to support Clinical Lecturers who are looking to develop and strengthen their research careers with a £30000 grant and mentoring from experienced Academy Fellows.

The Winter Meeting is an opportunity for the awardees to share their research, network with each other, Academy Fellows and Research Funders, and explore the next steps in their career. It is a full-day conference, held at the Academy's headquarters in London.
