Cambridge school through to national business final

Business-savvy students from Hills Road 6th Form College beat off competition from 10 other local teams to win the Cambridge heat of ICAEW’s national business and accounting competition, BASE last week.

Hills Road impressed the judges and will go on to represent the East of England at the national final which takes place in Birmingham in June. This was one of 46 heats attracting nearly 3,000 students around the country.

BASE links schools, students and employers to develop employability skills and provide an insight into what a career in accountancy, business and finance might be like. Assuming the role of ICAEW Chartered Accountants, the students had two hours to analyse a business situation, before presenting their ideas to a panel of top business professionals.

Pippa Bourne, ICAEW Regional Director for the East of England, said:  “The room was buzzing with energy and enthusiasm and everyone entered into the spirit of the competition.  When you see this level of achievement, it makes you positive about the future”.

Head judge, Sarah Lewis, tutor and course manager with Kaplan said: “The winning team demonstrated what good team work is all about. They understood the numbers but took them a step further.  A good Chartered Accountant should be able to make the numbers talk and that’s what this team did.”

The mentor for the winning team, Ali Hepburn, who works with PwC, said:  “The team was well prepared.  Team members understood individual strengths and weaknesses and allocated tasks accordingly”.

The BASE competition was supported by local firms and businesses including Grant Thornton, EY, PwC, KPMG, Price Bailey, BDO and PEM  who provided professional mentors and judges.
