Cambridge scientist swaps the lab bench for the green bench

A Cambridge scientist has traded her lab coat for legislation as she meets with parliamentarians in Westminster this week as part of a unique pairing scheme run by the Royal Society.

Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner and Dr Flavia Mancini from Murray Edwards College are paired on the scheme which matches up scientists and parliamentarians so that they can learn about each other’s worlds and explore how research findings can inform policy making.

Dr Mancini, a neuroscientist, is shadowing Mr Zeichner as he speaks in a Bill Committee and attends a variety of engagements in Westminster this week. She will also attend seminars and panel discussions about how evidence is used in policy making and take part in a mock Select Committee.

Daniel Zeichner MP said: “It is great to show Flavia how we make decisions in Parliament. Cambridge is a world leader in science but, since our decision to leave the EU, there is a great deal of uncertainty about research funding and whether we can continue to recruit top scientists."
