Cambridge Summer Music Festival 2016

The most exhilarating fortnight in Cambridge’s arts calendar is just around the corner. The Cambridge Summer Music Festival celebrates the best in live classical music, giving audiences the chance to hear world-class musicians perform in superb venues in and around this beautiful university town.

Cambridge Summer Music Festival

Friday 15 – Saturday 30 July 2016

Now in its 37th year, the Festival is delighted to welcome its new director John McMunn, who is keen to build on the hugely successful approach developed by his predecessor Juliet Abrahamson. Regular festival goers will notice a fresh look, but the aims of Cambridge Summer Music will be reaffirmed in this year’s vibrant and innovative programming – continuing to support emerging young talent, showcasing our finest living composers, exploring new approaches to the classical repertoire and reaching out to the local community.

There’s an impressive variety of concerts to appeal to every taste, from the opening concert by The Schubert Ensemble (including a newly-commissioned work by local composer Jeremy Thurlow) to the rousing grand Finale, featuring Rossini’s highly theatrical Stabat Mater. As at past Festivals, there will be plenty of established names, such as tenor John-Mark Ainsley, vocal ensemble I Fagiolini and the Academy of Ancient Music alongside newer artists, including BBC Young Musician, pianist Martin James Bartlett, and rising star of the opera world, soprano Louise Alder. Audiences will be able to enjoy some of their favourite works performed in breath-taking surroundings, as well as exciting new music by contemporary composers. Children are well catered for with fun-filled Music for Kids events created specially for families, and the popular Sounds Green concerts at the world-renowned University Botanic Garden also make a welcome return.

Cambridge is the perfect setting for a summer music festival. We encourage you to make a day of it, absorbing all the pleasures that Cambridge in July has to offer – glorious architecture, walks along the backs, willows trailing in the river, punting with friends, exquisite courtyard gardens, atmospheric pubs and cafes, lively markets and quirky independent shops – combined with outstanding live music throughout the day and late into the evening.
