Cambridgeshire’s Expedeon expands following £240,000 in new funding

Cambridgeshire-based Expedeon, a specialist in protein discovery and analysis spun out of Cambridge University in 2003, is to invest in new infrastructure and machinery following £240,000 in funding from Santander Corporate & Commercial. The business has seen a surge in UK and global demand for its hi-tech services and is expanding to accommodate new opportunities.

Founded in 2003 by Dr Heikki Lanckriet and Dr Daniel Jones, Expedeon’s vision has been to develop and commercialise tools and reagents for protein research. The company began selling end products in 2007 and, under CEO Dr Lanckriet, has also expanded via targeted acquisitions – US-based PageGel Inc. in 2009; Protein Discovery Inc. in 2012; and Astranet System Ltd in 2013. In the process, the company has established offices in Singapore and San Diego to complement its UK base in Harston.

The funding from Santander Corporate & Commercial will help the business not only to expand its operations by investing in a state-of-the-art new production line and refurbishing the Harston facility, but it will also support Expedeon’s international expansion via an Enterprise Finance Guaranteed facility.

Dr Heikki Lanckriet, CEO, Expedeon, said: “These are exceptionally exciting times for the business as we renovate our premises and invest in new infrastructure. We are delighted be able to develop our facilities within the UK, as well as our recently opened offices in Singapore. We are pleased to be working with Santander and are extremely grateful for its support and advice at this critical time in the development of Expedeon into a world-class leader in the field of protein discovery and analysis.”

Jon Everitt, Relationship Director, Santander Corporate & Commercial, said: “The management team at Expedeon has a clear vision for the expansion and development of the business. This vison has seen them successfully develop within the UK, as well as grow internationally, and we have no doubt that its success will continue. Santander is committed to helping UK companies grow both at home and overseas, and with our considerable global strength and expertise, we are well placed to help Cambridgeshire businesses with their international growth plans.”
