Celebrating the art of children’s picture books

The Cambridge Festival of Illustration returns next month with a bumper week of activities, following its successful debut in the city last year.

Lecturers and students on the MA Children’s Book Illustration course at Anglia Ruskin University are once again teaming up with Heffers Bookshop to stage the six-day festival, which last year saw hundreds of visitors flocking to sell-out events.

The festival runs from 5-10 November 2012 and will feature talks, book signings and workshops from leading international artists including recent Children’s Laureate Anthony Browne and award-winning Italian picture book creator Beatrice Alemagna.

The events, the majority of which are free, take place at Anglia Ruskin’s East Road campus and Heffers bookshop on Trinity Street, and the festival kicks off with the unveiling of four illustrated panels outside Heffers, each designed by a recent Anglia Ruskin graduate.

Recent MA Children’s Book Illustration graduates Marta Altés (Macmillan) and Birgitta Sif (Walker Books) will be launching their new books at the festival.  Marta’s previous book ‘No!’ won the Moonbeam Children’s Book Award and the Nottingham Children’s Book Award, and was shortlisted for the prestigious Waterstones Children’s Book Prize earlier this year.

Other highlights include a hands-on children’s drawing and colouring event at Heffers on Saturday, 10 November (11am) and a conversation with James Mayhew, the million-selling author of the Katie and Ella Bella series, on Friday, 9 November (6pm).

Martin Salisbury, Professor of Illustration at Anglia Ruskin, said: “After last year’s success, we were keen to organise another festival this year with our friends at Heffers.

“We are especially pleased to be able to welcome international artists of the stature of Beatrice Alemagna and Anthony Browne, both revered around the world for their innovative graphic work.  Alongside a number of up and coming stars from our own ‘stable’ there should be something for everyone with an interest in children’s book illustration.”
