Customers at Papworth Trust’s Cambridge Centre teamed up with leading construction and development company Skanska to design artworks which are now on display close to the construction site entrance for the new hospital, next to Addenbrooke’s.
While the project was originally aimed at improving the landscape of the multi-million pound construction site, it wowed judges of the Considerate Constructors Scheme Ivor Goodsite competition.
Jo Revitt, corporate partnership fundraiser at Papworth Trust, said: “We have always had a great relationship with Skanska so we were delighted to once again work with them on the artwork.
“Our customers showed some fantastic imagination and also appreciation, through art, of all the help Skanska has given us. To then gain recognition in a national competition was simply fantastic.”
Staff at Skanska have supported the disability charity over the last year, by helping to landscape the garden of the Cambridge Centre, based in Hawthorn Way, and also holding a series of fundraising events.
Sarah Duffin, office manager at Skanska, said: “With our building projects, we always work with local communities, and we know how important Papworth Trust is to local people.
“The customers at the Cambridge Centre were inspired by the work we did in their garden and through our general support and it was amazing to see it come to life on 8ft-high sheets.
“Everyone at Skanska has loved supporting Papworth Trust. We all find it very inspiring visiting the centre and talking to staff, volunteers and the disabled people supported by the charity.”
In recognition of coming second in the competition, each member of the centre who took part was given a certificate and medal.
Sarah added: “The Ivor Goodsite competition attracts hundreds of entries so we were completely shocked when we heard we had been named as a runner-up.
“One of the pieces of artwork centred around the word ‘love’ – and it even had a few of us in tears.”
