The announcement, which was made during the Chancellor’s 2026 Mais Lecture on Tuesday 17 March, doubles-down on the Government’s vision for Cambridge to become the UK’s ‘Silicon Valley’.
Nicknamed 'Silicon Fen', the corridor is home to evolving and innovative industries from bio science research to artificial intelligence (AI) start-ups. The funding will create new infrastructure, deliver good jobs, and improve connectivity across the region.
The Government also plans to kickstart development by acquiring land through compulsory powers, where landowners are blocking progress or make unreasonable demands. This strategy will ensure that projects move swiftly and are delivered efficiently for the communities they intend to serve.
The increase to funding follows the Government’s recent announcement of a consultation on the creation of a Greater Cambridge Development Corporation. Local people will have the chance to contribute their views on how such a body should operate, and Mr Zeichner has previously emphasised the importance of doing so.
Mr Zeichner has been a vocal proponent of renewed government interest into investing in the corridor and emphasised its importance during a debate he organised in Parliament late last year. The MP has consistently stressed the need to ensure funding meets the needs of Cambridge’s growing community, including building more houses and expanding public transport.
Reacting to the Chancellor’s announcement, Mr Zeichner commented:

The doubling of previously announced funding shows a clear recognition of Cambridge’s contribution to economic growth and scientific and technological innovation.
I believe we should be aiming to make Cambridge the most liveable city in Europe – and this targeted investment is exactly what we need to achieve this ambition.”
