Figures just released show that there were 1,573 people out of work last month – 81 fewer than the same period last year – and just 2.8 per cent of the working population. Among the 18 to 24-year-old job seekers 395 were still looking for a job last month compared with 435 in the same period last year.
Julian said: “I am delighted that we continue to see an overall improvement in the city’s job market and that our young people are managing to find work. This is very encouraging.
“Some of the jobs being created at this time of the year could, of course, be seasonal positions but they are extremely valuable in helping people to get back to work and they provide all important experience. Hopefully some may find permanent positions off the back of these jobs.
“For those still looking for work, the run-up to Christmas with its extra expense can be an extremely difficult and challenging time. My thoughts are with those families in the hope that the coming weeks and months will bring better news. The fact that the job market is moving shows that confidence is slowly returning among employers and this can only be good news for the future.”

News that Cambridge’s unemployment figures continue to fall and more young people are finding work has been welcomed by the city’s MP Julian Huppert.
