CMR named best entrepreneurial med-tech company

The British company developing the next generation surgical robot won first place at Cambridge Independent’s inaugural Entrepreneurial Science and Technology Awards.

CMR Surgical, based in Cambridge UK, Europe’s Innovation Capital, has beaten fierce competition to be awarded the best scale-up medtech company for developing surgical robot, Versius.

The award, which singles out the most innovative medtech company in the field, reflects CMR’s rapid growth since the company was set up three years ago. CMR now employs a team of more than 100 highly skilled engineers and designers, having more than doubled in size within a year.

The Cambridge Independent Entrepreneurial Science and Technology Awards ceremony commends a collection of brilliant start-up and scale-up companies.

Charles Cotton, serial entrepreneur and a judge at the awards ceremony, said, “It’s impossible to ignore the urgent need to revolutionise surgery and bring better techniques to patients around the globe. CMR’s surgical robot is truly innovative and has the potential to really impact the lives of millions of patients worldwide. CMR is definitely the one to watch.”

CMR will help to realise the potential of minimal access surgery aiming to be one of the largest surgical robotic companies internationally in five years, with a long-term ambition to have a robot in every major hospital.

Martin Frost, CEO of CMR Surgical, said: “We’re thrilled to win best scale-up in the medtech category this year. Given the impressive level of innovation coming out of Cambridge, we are honoured to be awarded such a prestigious prize.”
