Neal Lawson, the Chair of the progressive campaigning group Compass, will deliver the latest talk in the “New Political Landscape” series, organised by the Labour History Research Unit at Anglia Ruskin University.
Lawson’s free public talk “Does Labour and the wider left need a progressive alliance?” will take place at Anglia Ruskin’s Cambridge campus on Thursday, 9 March (5.45pm).
The assumptions on which British policy making has been made for a generation are being challenged by the UK’s decision to leave the European Union and the Trump presidency in the US. The “New Political Landscape” series of talks and discussions seeks to examine the new political order as it comes into being.
Rohan McWilliam, Professor of Modern British History at Anglia Ruskin and Director of the Labour History Research Unit, said: “It would seem that we have arrived at a moment when the political landscape is changing decisively, but how is the left going to respond?
“Has the time come for progressive politics in Britain to get less tribal? What is the point of Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens standing against each other when they agree on so much?
“Given the recent call of Tony Blair for the British people to rise up against Brexit, the progressive parties need to decide whether they are best served by creating an anti-Tory alliance or whether it is vital they retain their own identities. We look forward to hearing Neal’s views on this important topic.”
Lawson has been one of the key figures over the last decade in trying to stimulate new thinking on the left. He writes regularly for The Guardian and is a regular contributor to current affairs programmes such as Newsnight.
