Conference explores the challenges and risks of Internet enabled devices

Organisers have announced that this year's UK Device Developers' Conference will have several technical presentations that explore the challenges and the risks that developers face when developing systems and devices which connect to the Internet.

Touching on subjects such as 'Device to Cloud Connectivity', 'Cryptography Techniques and Data Protection Protocols' and 'integrating a Network Stack into Existing Software', experts in this field will be sharing their real world experience and industry knowledge.

The Device Developers' Conference is a UK event for engineers and designers involved in the development of intelligent systems and devices.  The 2014 Device Developers’ Conference will take place over four dates and four locations.  Starting with Bristol on Tuesday 20th May, the event will then visit Cambridge (22nd May), Manchester (3rd June) and Scotland (5th June).

The Device Developers' Conference explores the new technologies and tools that are used in the development of embedded systems and electronics. The aim of the event is to provide a productive forum whereby engineers can meet key industry experts from design tool and hardware vendors, as well as undertaking half-day workshops and presentations that offer new skills and knowledge.

“Enabling a device with Internet connectivity opens up a world of possibilities,” said John Efstathiades, Technical Director of Pebble Bay and a presenter at the Conference. “Internet connectivity can enable real-time remote monitoring, remote control, remote data collection and even automatic software upgrades. What’s more, this connectivity is now worldwide and available via any computer or mobile device. It is changing the way engineers consider the development of embedded systems.”

One of the most important aspects of the "Internet of Things" vision is that smart objects communicate effectively with each other and with applications residing in data centres or the Cloud.

A presentation by Italian computer board manufacturer Eurotech will explore the technical building blocks required to build a distributed system of devices and sensors that effectively interconnects with an IT infrastructure. These solutions are a combination of hardware, firmware, operating systems, programming frameworks and an external infrastructure, and enable developers to focus on their core activities.

“In a world of high connectivity and increasing awareness of the importance of data security, designing secure embedded systems is now becoming a fundamental requirement,” said Trevor Martin,Technical Specialist at Hitex Ltd. “Our talk at this event will present an overview of the key embedded cryptography techniques and data protection protocols; we then consider how these can be implemented on a resource-limited microcontroller and what security features are now being added by silicon vendors to make this task easier.”

Attendance at the Device Developers' Conference, including a series of 40-minute technical presentations, is free to engineers and project managers working in the technology sector. The half-day workshops are subject to a small charge.  For more information, or to reserve your place at one of the events, visit:
