Conservatories go back to the drawing board

Traditional conservatories are cold in winter and sometimes too hot in summer.

Admiral Homespace has been designing and building conservatories for 27 years and has seen the glass garden room evolve from a greenhouse structure right through to the contemporary glass extensions being built on many houses today.

Using this knowledge and work history, Steve Thorogood, the Managing Director and founder of the company, has decided to design a concept room utilising the best of conservatory and traditional home extension construction techniques.

The GlassBox concept is a modern glass room combining solid sections of wall and roof and unlimited glass areas with minimal framing and maximum opening to the garden.

Steve explains the ‘recipe’ for this design as follows: "Take natural light from above, maximum view to the front and sides, mix in all year comfort with temperature control plus add bespoke tailoring and colouring to suit... then make it a funky looking room."

To interpret this he explains: "Traditional conservatories are cold in winter and sometimes too hot in summer. Brick built extensions are often dark and do not offer anything different to other rooms in the house. It can be the case that both look dated, depending on the property they are attached to.

"With GlassBox we are offering a different type of conservatory that is actually a largely glazed extension as opposed to a temporary structure. These glass rooms combine aluminium windows and doors that have minimum framing and huge glass areas. Flat roofing with glass sections that allow light from above and solid areas of walling to create a seamless link between house and garden.

"GlassBox will be the first contemporary conservatory that is designable by the client albeit with the help of our design team here at Admiral. Once the design is agreed upon, we will handle every aspect of the build from permissions to structural calculations and internal finishing."

Although it is only on the drawing board and not built at the showroom as yet, the company is already working on designs for various clients in Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.

The Glassbox Display Room is planned for construction at the Alconbury Show Centre for October 2016 and represents a major investment for Admiral Homespace.
