Could you volunteer to make a better Cambridge?

An exciting new event next weekend aims to bring together voluntary organisations with members of the community who would like to help make a real difference to life in Cambridge.

The Volunteer For Cambridge fair, organised by Cambridge City Council and Cambridge Hub, will feature a market-place of more than 80 Cambridge-based charities, organisations and societies who work to improve society and the environment through volunteering.

People attending will be able to speak directly to these organisations – working in areas including health, social care, young people, education, culture, the environment, sport, anti-poverty and justice – to discover more about what they do and about the volunteering opportunities available with them.

Cllr Richard Johnson, Executive Councillor for Community, Arts and Recreation, said: “The aim of the Volunteer For Cambridge fair is to bring together everyone in the city, including residents and students, who would like to make a tangible contribution to improving life here.

“Volunteering is a great way to get involved in causes that you care about, to help improve the community, learn new skills and meet people from all walks of life. I hope that anyone who has ever considered volunteering will attend the fair at the Guildhall, and find out about how volunteering could transform their own, and other people’s lives.”

Anna Malan, manager of Cambridge Hub, said: “We’re really excited to be showcasing such a diversity of groups at Volunteer For Cambridge. There will be opportunities to get involved in everything from fire-fighting to cooking meals for the community, which shows that volunteering can encompass such a broad spectrum of activities.

“This will be a great event for anyone who wants to find out how to get involved with a cause that they care about, even if only for one hour a week.”

The fair takes place at the Guildhall in Cambridge from 11am-4pm on Saturday 28 February. As well as stalls, there will be a series of talks throughout the day, activities for children and a pop-up café serving food and drink inside the Guildhall. Entrance is free.

Among the 80 organisations attending the Volunteer For Cambridge will be Cambridge and District Volunteer Centre, Soroptimist international, Cambridge Cycling Campaign, Encompass Network, Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Jimmy’s Cambridge, RNLI, Street Child World Cup, Rainbow Saver Credit Union, Cambridge 105, Alzheimer’s Research UK, Cambridge Live, Camfed, St John Ambulance, Transition Cambridge, Cambridge City Council Local Nature Reserves, British Heart Foundation, You Can Bike Too, Girlguiding Cambridge, Age UK Cambridgeshire, Centre 33 and Care Network Cambridgeshire.
