CUH shortlisted for patient safety award

Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) has been shortlisted for the CHKS Top Hospitals programme patient safety award 2014.

The CHKS Top Hospitals awards celebrate the success of healthcare providers across the UK, and are given to acute organisations for their achievements in healthcare quality and improvement.

The patient safety award recognises outstanding performance in providing a safe hospital environment for patients and is based on a range of indicators, including rates of hospital-acquired infections and mortality. CUH is one of five Trusts shortlisted.

Dr Keith McNeil, chief executive of CUH, said:”We are very pleased to have been shortlisted for this prestigious award. Quality and safety is at the heart of everything we do here at CUH, and this recognition is a real tribute to our staff. Two consecutive reports from the CQC have placed CUH in the lowest risk banding, further adding to this recognition.”

“We deliver some of the most complex and advanced treatments available and we are maintaining some of best patient outcomes in the country. As well as this, we compare well to similar leading teaching hospitals on a number of other measures, but there is always room for improvement.”

CHKS has used 25 years of experience in the analysis of hospital data to decide the indicators on which each of the Top Hospitals programme awards are judged. Awards are made on the basis of an analysis of publicly available datasets and every NHS acute trust is included.

Jason Harries, managing director, CHKS said: “Every hospital is accountable to its patients, their families and carers as well as the local community to provide a safe environment. Our patient safety award highlights those trusts that clearly share a commitment to driving improvement and engendering a culture of excellence throughout their organisations and it is a credit to the staff at CUH that it has been shortlisted for this award.”

The CHKS Top Hospitals programme awards will be held in London on 13 May and is set to be attended by over 200 guests attended by over 200 guests including leaders from across the healthcare sector, from the Department of Health, Royal Colleges, and acute trusts.
