The government’s proposals confirm an ambition to increase train frequency between Oxford and Cambridge to up to five services per hour, alongside substantial improvements to stations across the route. In Cambridge, the plans include a new entrance at Cambridge Station and a new station at Cambridge East, intended to support future housing and employment growth, as well as improving links to destinations including Norwich, Felixstowe and Ipswich via the upgraded Newmarket Line.
These developments form part of a wider strategy to support jobs, ease congestion and expand sustainable transport options for residents and businesses across Greater Cambridge.
Mr Zeichner will continue to engage with local communities, transport stakeholders and the government to help ensure that Cambridge’s priorities are reflected throughout the next phase of the project.
Mr Zeichner said: “Today’s announcement is an important step forward for East West Rail. Improved rail connectivity will support the long-term economic success of our region and help people travel more easily and more sustainably.
