Designers and crafters have always needed one another, but it’s become much more complex in recent years. From fashion to furniture, the input of cutting-edge technology has become crucial, whether the designers are using computer-aided design (CAD) or the creation process is using 3D printing instead of traditional methods.
The WORTH Partnership Project is being funded by the EU to encourage exactly that. Their objective is “to support 150 cross-boundary partnership projects between creatives, manufacturers and technology professionals, involving a minimum of 450 companies throughout the four-year project.”
Funding comes from the EU’s COSME (Competitiveness of Enterprises and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) programme, whose fund totals €2.3bn. It aims to fund and facilitate partnerships across Europe between creative people, such as designers and crafters, and SMEs offering technology and manufacturing skills.

So how does it work? Well, partnerships have to be between at least two enterprises. You may already have a partner, in which case you can apply for funding together of up to €12,000, but if not the project can help find your ideal partner.
If your application is accepted, WORTH offer a lot more than money. Coaching and advice will be available from leading European names in the design, technology and fashion worlds as well as a place in two of the top international trade fairs and exhibitions, product market positioning and branding, and networking and cross-sector collaboration.

You can apply to the WORTH Partnership Project by submitting your idea, and you’ll be judged on your “attitude to innovate”, as well as your idea’s social and environmental impact, technical and industrial capability, and market potential.
The first closing date is 31st December 2017. There’ll be other application opportunities each year up to 2020, though it’s uncertain whether UK enterprises will be eligible after Brexit.
