pjb Associates has recently put together a consortium that has submitted a bid to Innovate UK for funding to produce an action-orientated feasibility study that will identify the "triggers", barriers, constraints and opportunities for developing innovative business models for creating of new or modified "Mobility as a Service" (MaaS) options for accessing "clean" personalised transport solutions as an alternative to using cars.

If successful, the focus of the project will develop two testbed locations along the extended Cambridge-Oxford high tech arc to actively encourage and test out new sustainable personalised transport solutions to enhance the limited conventional public transport in smaller towns and rural areas using multiple mode solutions like shared taxis/mini-buses, on demand services, e-bike, e-cargo, e-scooter, electric cars and eventually shared autonomous vehicles based at local, neighbourhood hubs.

The two testbed sites will be Ely in Cambridgeshire and Bicester in Oxfordshire and their surrounding areas. It will address the so-called "last mile/first mile" mobility issues that are forcing people to use a car despite only being a few miles from their destination like railway stations, industrial estates, leisure and shopping centres
