Dr Peter Allen honoured for research excellence

Dr Peter Allen, Head of the Visual Function and Physiology Research Group at Anglia Ruskin University, has been awarded one of the most prestigious honours in UK optics research.

Dr Allen was presented with the Neil Charman Medal for Research at the College’s annual Diploma Ceremony at Central Hall, Westminster, which welcomed more than 260 new optometrists into the profession.

The medal, which honours research excellence in the fields of optometry, optics and vision science at a level above postgraduate, was presented by Professor Edward Mallen.

It recognises Dr Allen’s outstanding work on visual stress, and the link between reading difficulties and perceptual distortion.  A paper covering this work was published in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science.

Michael Bowen, Director of Research at the College of Optometrists said: “One of the key aims of the College is to enable and support research into optometry and related fields, which will advance the profession and result in real public benefit.

“There is some amazing research taking place in university departments, hospital clinics and practices across the UK, and the College’s Research Excellence Awards allow us to shine a light on some of these projects, and recognise the hard work, commitment and achievements of some of the most talented individuals working in optometric research  today.

“Dr Allen’s work is a great example of how technical research is needed to achieve real patient benefit.”

Speaking after the ceremony, Dr Allen said: “The College has always been a committed supporter of optometric research, and awards like this show how much it values the endeavours of those working in the field.

“I am both delighted and proud to be here and hope that I and the other award winners may in some way inspire the young newly-qualified optometrists graduating here today.”

The College of Optometrists is the professional, scientific and examining body for optometry in the UK, working for the public benefit.  It provides pre-registration training and assessment, continuous professional development opportunities, and advice and guidance on professional conduct and standards.
