Bury St Edmunds-based GP Dr Tracey Bempah founded Driver Medicals Network after becoming concerned about the unmet health needs she observed among professional drivers in general practice.
Tracey says: “During my work as a practising GP, I met many drivers with health concerns that had not previously been addressed. Some were reluctant to seek advice because they feared that identifying a medical condition might automatically affect their licence and livelihood.
“I often found myself encouraging drivers to attend routine health checks and reassuring them that many conditions can be treated or managed. I wanted to extend that approach into driver medicals and create a service where drivers feel that somebody genuinely cares about their health.
“Our principle is: ‘Your licence matters, but your health matters more.’ Each driver receives a dedicated 30-minute, GP-led appointment. It is not simply a tick-box exercise; it is also an opportunity to raise health concerns and receive appropriate advice.”
Driver Medicals Network supports individual drivers and businesses, including providing on-site medical clinics for fleet operators. Alongside Haverhill, appointments are available in Bury St Edmunds, Thetford, Newmarket, Ipswich, Peterborough and London.
Tracey comments: “I walked into The EpiCentre having visited several other venues, and it immediately felt right. It is conveniently located, has ample parking and a café, and provides attractive, professional rooms in which I can meet drivers.
“The management team can also help promote my business, and I can rent space by the day without committing to permanent premises while the company becomes established. As Driver Medicals Network grows, I may eventually need a permanent office here.”
