EACH receives over £2,800 after PML’s one million-metre row

Members of staff at a Harston construction consultancy, their friends, relatives and business partners have rowed over a million metres in a special charity challenge.

Planning Manager Limited (PML) has been able to donate £2,815.62 to East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) as a result.

Efforts, carried out on a rowing machine over the course of a month, contribute to the charity’s EACH Mile Counts campaign, the idea of which is for people to take on a sporting challenge, doing it their way and in their time. It might involve swimming the length of the River Cam at a community pool or cycling the distance of Land’s End to John o’ Groats.

Victoria Leivers, PML Company Secretary, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to raise money for EACH. With everyone’s input, we managed a distance of 1,029,000m. As the crow flies, that’s equivalent to rowing from Cambridge to Milan, Italy! We look forward to continuing our support of EACH.”

The distance rowed in metres equates to 1,029 kilometres and 639 miles.

Emily Rose, EACH Cambridgeshire Assistant Corporate Fundraiser, said: “This was a fantastic effort by everyone connected to PML and we’d like to say a big thank you. We rely on voluntary donations for over 80% of our income, so support like this from Cambridgeshire businesses is vital and hugely appreciated.”

EACH Mile Counts launched earlier this year, with the backing of Cambridge’s Paralympic gold medal-winning cyclist Louis Rolfe.

Raoul Monks, from Houghton and son of EACH Trustee Ann Monks, took on the first challenge related to the campaign, running seven marathons across seven countries in seven days.

EACH wants people to track how many miles they cover on its website, where a ‘wall of fame’ shows who is taking part and what they are doing. There is also a totaliser keeping track of the collective amount of miles covered. EACH hopes to see it hit at least 5,000 as the charity offers its free care and support to children and young people with life-threatening conditions, and their families, across an area of approximately 5,000 square miles.
