Michael Reynolds joins Eagle as Vice President of Global Sales, while Will Spooner is promoted to Chief Scientific Officer and Glenn Proctor is promoted to Chief Technical Officer. The new roles are part of Eagle’s on-going growth, including a series of new customer wins and the development of a bioinformatics software platform for the intelligent sharing of genomic data and metadata, which will be launched later this year.
Michael brings a wealth of sales and marketing experience to Eagle, along with a wide network of global contacts from a number of previous sales roles in the life science industry. Prior to Eagle, Michael was Director, EMEA Sales, at Pilgrim Software, and prior roles included Smart Analyst, APC Pharma and Etrials. A microbiologist by degree and a sales professional by choice, Michael has been working for major pharmaceutical companies or selling to life science and other organisations for more than 20 years.
Will moves into the newly created role of Chief Scientific Officer where he will be responsible for ensuring that Eagle remains at the forefront of bioinformatics knowledge. Will is a seasoned bioinformatician with a track record of delivering tools for high-throughput genomics research. Having worked previously on Ensembl, BioMart, Gramene and WormBase at the European Bioinformatics Institute, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and Cold Spring Harbor, his current focus is on making life easier for users of open source/data in commercial settings. His strategic thinking is driven by the huge opportunities for data analysis in the life sciences provided by the near-simultaneous arrival of NGS and cloud computing.
Glenn moves into the Chief Technical Officer role where he will be responsible for managing and improving Eagle’s systems to best support customers. During Glenn’s tenure at Eagle, he has set the technological direction of the company and spearheaded the implementation of the company's flagship software product. Glenn oversees Eagle’s software development and works with leading customers to define, implement and deliver solutions. Glenn previously led the software development of Ensembl at the European Bioinformatics Institute. Prior to that, Glenn explored business applications in areas as diverse as artificial life technologies, mobile phone capacity planning and games.

The appointments follow significant developments for Eagle this year. Eagle recently announced that the company won a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition, which will see the company further develop its technology for genomic data management and analysis. The competition was funded by the Department of Health, through the Small Business Research Initiative and managed by Genomics England, which supports the efforts to map 100,000 whole genomes of NHS patients with cancer or a rare disease by 2017. As a winner of the first phase, Eagle has received a share of the £1.6 million fund available. This will be used to extend the capabilities of its existing technology platform, which has been developed to meet the demand for improved NGS technology in the healthcare sector.
