ECM salary survey finds graduate software developers starting on £35k in Cambridge

ECM, the Cambridge-based high-tech recruitment experts who specialise in placing exceptional candidates, have released their latest annual Salary & Benefits Survey.

ECM's survey analyses data gathered during the final quarter of 2013, both directly from client companies and indirectly from job seekers, vacancies and placements. Its findings allow companies to compare salary levels and benefits packages, to ensure they retain key staff and continue to attract the most highly sought-after candidates.

Among other significant results, the survey found that for software roles there has been a noticeable broadening of the range of salaries offered; £35k is not uncommon now as a graduate starting salary, and similarly £40k for a fresh PhD. At the more experienced levels, salaries offered are noticeably increased relative to the previous  year. It is not surprising now to see £60k offered for senior, hands-on engineering roles, for example.

Martin Constantinides, one of ECM’s directors, says: “In the course of our work at ECM, we collect a large amount of data about the salaries and benefits being offered in the local area. We are always happy to provide informal, one-to-one advice to our clients so they can ensure their salaries and benefits remain competitive.

“Since 2008 we have extended and consolidated this by producing an annual, formal report based on detailed surveys of the salaries and benefits offered by our clients. Clients surveyed range from the ‘micro’ business size, with fewer than 10 employees, up to the large enterprise.

“Our survey provides a general guide – obviously individual benefits packages will vary considerably with a particular company’s situation. We are happy to continue to offer advice on a case-by-case basis.”

Advance copies of the survey have already been sent to participating clients, but it is now available more generally. Please contact ECM for details of the survey. Our website is at www.ecmselection.co.uk.
