The House Collection group opened Poets House in May 2013 and it has become firmly established as part of the Ely scene, welcoming more than 5,500 visitors and being named among the World’s Coolest New Hotels by The Times.
Poets House was formerly home to acclaimed local poet and writer Sybil Marshall, who took poetic inspiration from her native fens and won the Angel Prize for literature prior to her death in 2005.
Set close to Ely’s medieval cathedral, Poets House opened in May 2013 following a sensitive, design-led transformation of three grade II listed buildings to create a beautifully appointed hotel, restaurant and event venue combining classic English elegance with a contemporary twist. The 21 individually styled bedrooms offer every comfort and convenience, with full butler service available.
Since welcoming the first guests, the team at Poets House has been constantly busy, from breakfast throughout the day, every day. Local butcher Edis has, for example, supplied more than 3000 of its special House Collection sausages for the ever-popular full English breakfasts.
Afternoon tea at Poets House has proved a firm favourite among families, friends and residents – over 1000 people have tucked into the delicious selection of sandwiches and fancy cakes for a touch of Downton Abbey style indulgence.
Almost 9,000 cocktails have been mixed in the stunning Study Bar – the ideal place to get the evening going – while more than 5,250 main courses, including more than 700 steak dishes, have been served to local people and visitors from across the world in The Dining Room restaurant.
