EU Referendum: It’s a resounding STAY vote for students at the Stephen Perse Foundation

During April, Sixth Form students at the Stephen Perse Foundation – innovators in an education dedicated to creating independent thinkers – have campaigned on both sides of the EU debate, with activities culminating in a mock referendum this week, in which 87% of students voted for the UK to stay in the EU.

With many students eligible to vote in the forthcoming EU Referendum a real thirst for facts has been evident. As Ruth Taylor, Deputy Head at the Stephen Perse Sixth 6th College explains: “This is an historic moment in the UK's relationship with the EU. Even though not all of our students are entitled to vote, we wanted to give them the opportunity to engage with the issues and feel part of the process. Within the student body, there is a strength of feeling and passion about this issue – students can really see how the EU referendum will impact their lives as UK citizens.”

Students studying economics and politics led the debate, presenting both sides of the argument to their peers. Discussions provided a deeper understanding of the workings of the EU and its impact on the UK. Students were also encouraged to reflect on how our future society and economy will be affected.

Alongside the campaigns, Lower 6th form students Khadijah, Hannah and Anastasia created a blog at: https://spfeudebate.wordpress.com to share information and track progress and opinion. As one student commented: “It's so important for everyone to be involved with the referendum and be aware of the impact each result will have, even if you aren't able to vote. In fact, it is particularly important for our generation to take part as if the UK leaves the EU it will have huge consequences on our daily lives, and for us this referendum will decide what our futures might look like.”

Tricia Kelleher, Principal of the Stephen Perse Foundation comments: “As a Foundation, we encourage all young people to develop a global outlook, taking every opportunity to help students explore the wider world and their role within society.”

About the Stephen Perse Foundation

The Stephen Perse Foundation is different. We prepare young people for life in an ever-changing, global and digital world. Through our global outlook we connect students to a world of inspiring opportunities.

By teaching students to think for themselves, we achieve exceptional results – but for us, education is not just about grades. We see the individual behind the results. We develop strength of character, a sense of social responsibility and an ability to innovate and collaborate.

By celebrating diversity and collaboration in school and with our wider community we encourage students to choose a path that is right for them. We recognise potential in every child and inspire young people to achieve their dreams - guiding them every step of the way.
