A Cambridge solicitor has welcomed progress for EEA nationals keen to get confirmation of their status in the UK post-Brexit.
The EU Settlement Scheme is now open for the public testing phase for EEA nationals with a current passport, although those relying on ID cards will have to wait for the official launch date of 30 March 2019.
The application fee has also been scrapped with the government saying anyone who has already paid during the pilot stage of the scheme will be refunded.
Immigration Solicitor Julie Moktadir, Senior Associate at Stone King, said: “Following Brexit, EU citizens will need to apply for either settled or pre-settled status. The former is for those that have lived in the UK for five or more years and the latter for those who have not.
“Significantly, the Home Office will be looking for reasons to grant and not refuse settled or pre-settled status.
“It is therefore welcome that EEA nationals are now able to apply, but anyone who is unsure or needs legal advice is encouraged to contact us as we can help provide clarity during these uncertain times.”
As part of the application, the applicant will need to prove their identity by sending their identity document to the Home Office. This will be returned once identity has been confirmed.
