Free CPD event on fume cupboard safety and sustainability at Cambridge Science Park

On February 4th, Clean Air is hosting a free, accredited CPD session at Cambridge Science Park focused on how fume cupboards can be operated more safely and sustainably in commercial laboratories. The session will help attendees better understand the factors that influence containment performance, enabling them to keep laboratory users protected when working with hazardous substances. The CPD will also explore how optimised fume cupboard operation can significantly reduce energy use and carbon emissions without compromising safety. Attendees will leave with practical insight they can apply immediately to improve laboratory performance, reduce running costs and support wider sustainability goals.

Clean Air is hosting a free, accredited CPD event at Cambridge Science Park aimed at professionals responsible for the safety, design and sustainability of commercial laboratories.

Taking place on Wednesday 4 February 2026 at The Bradfield Centre, the session will focus on how fume cupboards can be operated more safely, efficiently and sustainably, without compromising containment performance. The event is particularly relevant for lab managers, lab designers, architects, specifiers and carbon or sustainability managers working in the Cambridge laboratory and life sciences community.

With more than 30 years of experience in laboratory containment, Clean Air is the only fume cupboard manufacturer in the UK to offer accredited CPD training. The session is designed to provide practical, standards led insight that can be applied directly in both new and existing laboratory environments.

The CPD will cover current standards and guidance including BS EN 14175, COSHH and HSG 258, helping attendees understand not only what compliance requires, but how it can be achieved in practice. The session will explore how fume cupboards are designed and how they work, with a focus on key performance factors such as sash position, baffle design, face velocity and leakage.

Attendees will also gain insight into extraction system design, including flow rate calculations, duct and discharge velocities, and the role of diversity. Typical services and add ons such as specialist extraction, fire suppression systems, autosash and VAV will be discussed, along with testing basics, containment targets and the environmental impact of fume cupboard operation.

A key benefit of attending is understanding how small operational and design decisions can have a significant impact on safety, energy use and running costs. The session will highlight how optimised fume cupboard performance can support lower energy consumption and reduced carbon impact while maintaining high standards of user protection.

The event offers an opportunity for attendees to refresh their technical knowledge, stay up to date with best practice, and gain accredited CPD in a focused, accessible format. It also provides a chance to engage with experts in fume containment and to ask practical questions relevant to day to day laboratory challenges.
