Steve Rotheram will be running 5k in this weekend’s Liverpool Rock ‘N’ Roll Series (Saturday May 28th) in support of leading disability charity Papworth Trust.
In particular, the Walton MP and former Lord Mayor will be fundraising – and raising awareness of – the charity’s research into unmet housing needs for disabled people.
Mr Rotheram said: ““There are approximately 12 million disabled people in Britain and this figure is set to increase as our population rises and people live for longer.
“This growing number means the problem is set to grow and the urgency to address the problem becomes ever pressing.
“Papworth Trust has teamed up worth Oxford Brookes University to develop a tool that can be used by local councils to more accurately establish the needs of disabled people and their homes.
“This is crucial. We already know that a disabled person is six times more likely to be employed if their home is accessible, and their healthcare needs also reduce as a consequence.
“Helping local authorities to more expertly help disabled people and developers in their area is at the heart of my support for this campaign.”
Mr Rotheram will be joined at the weekend-long event by Mark Norman, from Sheffield, who is also fundraising for Papworth Trust after he was inspired by his partner, Paula Fisher from Papworth Everard, who took part in the London Marathon for the charity.
Emma Blint, individual giving executive at Papworth Trust, said: “We are so grateful to Steve and Mark for using this fantastic event to fundraise for Papworth Trust. Every penny they raise will make such a difference to the disabled and older people we support.”
