This Girl Can - paralympic sport runs local sessions for visually impaired girls

Played with raised markings on the floor, blindfolds are used to ensure an even playing field as players locate the ball through sound. Currently, Goalball is the only Paralympic team sport for women and boasts a highly successful national women’s team.

Unlike many disability sports, Goalball offers players the opportunity to progress from amateur to professional player in a remarkably short space of time: Anna Tipton from the Women’s GB Team, found herself competing at the London 2012 Paralympic Games just two years after taking up the sport.

Mike Reilly, CEO of Goalball UK comments: “All too often, visually impaired people struggle to find a challenging and enjoyable activity developed specifically for their disability. Goalball offers a ready-made community of players and their families who band together to make each team a success.

“With these sessions we want to give girls the chance to play in an low pressure all-female environment and hopefully identify athletes with the potential to aim for Tokyo 2020. The Cambridge Dons is already a very successful club with international players such as Sarah Leiter counted among its members. With sessions taking place around the country, those taking part will have the chance to train for a This Girl Can national celebration tournament in April 2016.

The first session with be taking place at Atrium Hall, Netherhall School and Sports College, Queen Edith’s Way, Cambridge, CB1 8NN from 1.30pm – 6pm on Saturday 7th November 2015.
