Government's flood insurance deal welcomed

Yesterday (Thursday) as part of HM Treasury’s announcements on infrastructure funding, the Government said it had reached a deal with the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to provide low cost flood insurance called Flood Re.

Commenting on the announcement that households at risk of flooding are to have access to affordable insurance the Institution of Civil Engineers, Director General Nick Baveystock said:

“The progress by Government and the ABI in agreeing a deal to ensure households at risk of flooding get affordable insurance is welcome news and while an increase in Government investment in flood risk management has helped to facilitate this deal, we remain concerned that investment is still below pre-2010 levels.

“Along with increased investment, we would like to see more emphasis on flood resilience as a key factor in planning and development.”
