Hewitsons’ legal conference is a global success

A global legal conference in London, hosted by law firm Hewitsons, saw over 60 delegates attend from 24 countries across Europe, North and South America and the Asia-Pacific region.

During the successful LawExchange International (LEI) spring conference, five observer firms from the Czech Republic, Israel, Poland, the Republic of Ireland and the United Arab Emirates were formally invited to join the network, which will take it up to 29 countries worldwide.

Pat Flynn, a partner at Irish law firm Flynn O’Driscoll which is one of the new law firms who were invited to join the LEI network, said: “We are now at a size, and still growing, that many of our corporate clients require an international focus to be able to access the best legal advice internationally. Three of our partners attended as invitees at the LEI spring conference where we met the entire network, witnessed it in full operation and observed the closeness of the long-standing relationships at work.

“We are delighted to be asked to join the network as the Irish member, and look forward to being a strong participant of the LEI network going forward, both in terms of inward and outward referrals. We are also keen to garner management knowledge, experience and input from larger more established, successful law firms than ourselves.”

The conference commenced with a presentation delivered by Hewitsons’ Managing Partner, Colin Jones, outlining his vision for Hewitsons, being committed to its primary locations and using the LEI network, which Hewitsons founded in 1994, to support the many clients of the firm with international legal requirements. A keynote presentation was also delivered by Hewitsons’ Senior Partner elect Clare Colacicchi, which focused on quality assurance and how to meet client expectations in a demanding global market.

Colin Jones said: “We were delighted to welcome a record number of law firms and delegates to London for our LEI conference. It was an excellent opportunity for our global network of firms to come together and share ideas, and knowledge, from differing countries. I look forward to continuing to support the further expansion of this network in my role as Managing Partner.”

In addition to the main conference, the team at Hewitsons showed delegates around the sights and attractions of London. This included a gala dinner at the British Library and exclusive access to the Magna Carta exhibition, which celebrates the 800th year of the creation of the Magna Carta. Delegates also had the chance to cheer on the 30,000 runners taking part in the London Marathon on the Sunday, with several of the runners being those attending the two-day conference.

Lewis Isaacs, the Secretary and founder of LawExchange International, said: "This has been a marvellous conference: issues of real substance were discussed by more than 60 delegates and we are delighted at the prospect of having five more outstanding law firms as new members.”

The LEI network was founded by Hewitsons in 1994 and brings together an association of independent law firms from across the globe. The aim is to provide a comprehensive and seamless web of legal services to clients through access to trusted, local legal counsel across the world.

The conference took place over two days on the 24th – 25th April. Moving on from London, the autumn 2015 conference will be hosted by LEI Chairman, Eduardo Romeiro, from Lautenschlager, Romeiro e Iwamizu in Brazil. The Spring 2016 meeting will be hosted in Japan.

Our goal is simple: provide a comprehensive and seamless web of legal services to clients through access to trusted, local legal counsel across the globe.

LawExchange International member firms possess the local knowledge necessary to help eliminate the challenges associated with doing business in a worldwide marketplace. Access to this knowledge can prove invaluable to clients doing business in foreign markets in terms of navigating the local laws, procedures, economic and business climates, cultures and politics in the countries in which they are doing business.

LawExchange International members are comprised of some of the top commercial firms serving middle-market and entrepreneurial businesses around the world. Members are carefully selected for membership based on a number of factors, including professional competence, reputation, integrity, and commitment to exceptional client service.

Members maintain close professional and personal relationships by meeting two times per year at LawExchange International conferences; through periodic regional conferences, for example, involving our member firms in the United States and Latin America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region; and through regular communication throughout the year. Members not only share professional updates and best practices, but also maintain close working relationships which are essential to ensuring the continuity and quality of services which clients rightly expect.
