Hospital shines light on Christmas

The spirit of Christmas is arriving early at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Staff have teamed up to organise an event called ‘Shine a Light on Outpatients’, which will be held in the outpatients’ hall from 1pm to around 1.15pm on Monday (3 December).

Cambridge Mayor Cllr Nigel Gawthrope has been invited to switch the lights on a Christmas tree adorned with Christmas decorations and messages from staff, patients and visitors.

A choir and musician from Long Road Sixth Form College and hopefully children from a nearby school will join the festivities and Cambridge University NHS Foundation Trust staff will serve non-alcoholic mulled wine and mince pies to patients, carers and staff.

There will also be the opportunity to learn more about Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust and the work it does to help the hospitals, including its latest campaign to support children’s services.

Senior sister outpatients, Georgina Meyer, said: “This has become an annual event at Addenbrooke’s, since we know the sight of a Christmas trees and the sounds of a choir always lift the spirits of patients, visitors and staff.”

Senior sister for clinics one and 33, Viki Sanders, added “Our intention is to spread a little Christmas cheer and raise awareness of some very good causes. Everyone is welcome. We hope to have wooden baubles and other shapes for people to write a message on and place on the tree for a donation to Outpatients.’’
