How to make more out of big data

Eagle, an expert provider of bioinformatics software and services across a wide range of the life science and other sectors, has just announced the date and line-up of its next highly successful bioinformatics symposium, “Bigger than data – discover or die”.

The Fourth Annual Symposium will take place at the Babraham Research Campus in Cambridge, UK, on 27th March 2014.

This year’s symposium is called “Bigger than data – discover or die” and is aimed squarely at getting big data to work more effectively for bioinformaticians and biologists.

Big data is everywhere, spanning all aspects of life and it keeps on growing. With every advance in life sciences, more data is created. While we’re now more adept at storing, aggregating and combining large amounts of data, keeping on top of its proliferation and getting the most out of the data is imperative if organisations want to take advantage and benefit from it.

The challenge comes in two parts: physically connecting silos of biological data for effective mining, and making sense of the various experimental datasets available by analysing their metadata.

The Eagle symposium is a one-day event which will showcase available solutions from the bioinformatics community and demonstrate some real-life examples on how these challenges are being addressed by industry.

The past three Eagle symposia gave delegates the opportunity to hear from some of the biggest names in the bioinformatics from industry and academia, and the 4th symposium will be no different.

The current line-up includes:

•       Keynote: Cameron Neylon, PLOS
•       Mark Schreiber, Novartis
•       Martin Strahm, Roche
•       Aline Nink, Bayer
•       Anthony Rowe, J&J
•       Susanna Sansonne, Oxford University
•       Fiona Neilsen, DNA Digest
•       Arek Kasprzyk, BioMart
•       Lee Harland, Connected Discovery

Richard Holland, Chief Business Officer of Eagle said: “While the industry has been discussing big data for a long time now, it does seem to have missed the point of collecting this data, namely the ability to use it to its full potential. The symposium will showcase available solutions from the bioinformatics community and demonstrate some real-life examples about how this challenge is being overcome. Getting the most out big data poses one of the biggest challenges to industry, companies, organisations and policy makers. Failure to do so poses the risk of underperforming and losing out to a competitor. Our 4th Annual Symposium aims to address this key issue and I look forward to meeting as many people as possible on the day.”

Eagle supplies quality outsourced bioinformatics solutions. We combine cloud computing and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) expertise with a track record in building scalable, efficient genomics analysis workflows using both commercial and open source software. Our services have added value to R&D processes and reduced time to market at many global life sciences companies including big pharma, crop science, personal hygiene and animal health.
