Starting a career in the tech industry can be daunting, especially if you haven't done your research or worked in a real-life tech working environment. You need to know what skills are necessary and what sector you want to work in. Even if you think you know your stuff it always pays off to do extra research before you go out into the real world!
Do I need a degree?
The main degrees that tech companies require is either in Computer Science or Software Engineering. However, recent research from Google shows that you don't actually need a degree to work in tech! Here's a few tech jobs that you can get without a degree:
- Systems Analyst
- Computer Support
- Network Engineer
- Computer Programmer
- Web Developer
- Cybersecurity Analyst
- IT Technician
- Technical Writer
- Junior QA Engineer
- Front and Back-end Developer
- JavaScript Engineer
Just bear in mind that some companies will not interview you without the desired experience, skills or degree. If you are unsuccessful because of this just stay positive and keep going!
Further development:
If you are struggling with finding employment after your degree try to develop your skills further. You can do this by reading computer books, enrolling onto online learning programmes and attending workshops. There are 100's out there which give you the tools to teach yourself and to progress further. Research from I Love Coding shows that 87% of candidates actually taught themselves a new programming language and 48.6% took up an online programme or software development course.
If a company see's that you have conducted further training then this shows them that you are willing to learn and can self teach. Companies are very impressed by candidates who are 'self taught'. By doing this you can also learn modern day technology techniques that no one else would know and you can teach these when you get employment. If you are looking at becoming an expert in tech then you will need to know everything about it.
Applying for jobs:
When applying for jobs, companies always look at relevant experience, skills and studies. They want to see that you have the skills that line up with their desires. Show off what you have learnt throughout the years at university. If you haven't been to university then you need to show your relevant studies, skills and experience.
When it comes to applying for jobs always make sure you have read up on the company, their application process and deadlines. Most of all make sure that you are prepared. Once you have prepared you will know what to expect and will have more time. The application process usually consists of:
- Explaining situations
- Showing off projects
- What you did and how you did it
- Describing an outcome and how you would do things differently
Describe your answers in full, check that they are clear and honest. Remember to make your answers relevant to the job that you are applying for. Companies like to employ candidates that know what they are talking about so in your application just include some 'tech-savvy language', this is key when applying!
If you are unsure on how you have filled out your application it's always a good idea to have someone read through it with you afterwards. This is just to double check if it all makes sense and if you need to add anything else to it. Once you are happy then you may submit.
