The company, run by husband and wife team Katherine and Jason Duff, won the ‘Business in the Community East of England Employee Volunteering Business Award’ for their work through Peterborough ProHelp, an organisation made up of over 30 professional firms that pledge their professional services, free of charge, to voluntary and community groups in their local area.
Says Jason: “When we started out we had a lot of help ourselves and as a business we wanted to give back in some way.” Keeping HR Simple has worked with charities offering all types of HR assistance from employment law issues to helping with recruitment, including job descriptions, and training. “Basically we’re helping them to stay legal,” says Katherine.
Organisations who have benefitted from Keeping HR Simple’s professional help have included Little Miracles, a parent led a Peterborough-based parent led support group and charity for families with children with additional needs, disabilities and life limiting conditions; Peterborough Racial Equality Council and mental health charity Mind in Cambridgeshire. Says Michelle King from Little Miracles. “Keeping HR Simple helped us recruit our first member of staff to make sure everything legal was in place. We have now gone on to employ five more people on our own, but without their help we wouldn’t have been able to employ one person never mind six. They gave us the support and confidence to do that.”
The award was very well deserved according to Keith Sherring from ProHelp: “I'm delighted that Keeping HR Simple, have won this award. What they do and how they do it exemplify how a responsible local business can make a huge difference to their community by donating knowledge and experience as well as time. This award also gives an example of how valuable the ProHelp group is to Peterborough in general. The quality and importance of Keeping HR Simple's pro bono work makes them very worthy winners of this regional award."
